20 Years in the Making: Semantic Web Company and Ontotext Join Forces to Become Graphwise

Over 20 years ago, Semantic Web Company (SWC) was born with the mission to bring knowledge graphs and semantic technologies to enterprises struggling with their unstructured and siloed data. The founders and early employees of the company began working on the PoolParty Semantic Suite, the flagship product of SWC, which served as a middleware between customer databases and front-end applications. This middleware provides all the unique benefits of a semantic layer, enabling taxonomy management, automated tagging, semantic search, recommender systems, and knowledge graphs. 

20 years of diligently working in the knowledge management space have come and gone for Semantic Web Company (SWC), and today marks an important milestone in SWC history. Today we set out on a new chapter – one that sees the merging of SWC with long term partner, Ontotext.

Prior to this merger, GraphDB and PoolParty were often used by customers simultaneously, so it is only fitting now that the products are combined in one Knowledge Graph and AI Powerhouse: Graphwise. Our own excitement aside, Graphwise comes at a critical point in the world of AI and large language models (LLMs). The market for LLM-based platforms (think ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini) has soared, producing a lot of products that are decent but to be frank, not great – they often provide inadequate, confusing answers based on sources you can’t trace back. While LLMs have strong linguistic capability – i.e. they are able to generate fully developed text and content – they don’t have the context to make this content worthwhile. The LLM may not have an understanding of how facts about the same entities are related  or be able to fill in data gaps. This is where knowledge graphs are best suited, as they can map the diverse connections between data objects and provide the LLM with more background information from multimodal, often very heterogeneous data sources.
