Integrating CABI: Creating Millions of Concept Connections with PoolParty
With support from PoolParty, CABI revitalized their thesaurus as SKOS/RDF, integrating it with 80,000 CABI Compendium datasheets, enabling tools like Invasive Species Detection, Pest Risk Analysis, and Horizon Scanning, enhancing search and discovery in the CABI Digital Library.

The challenge.
Converting the CABI Thesaurus into a unified SKOS format to facilitate faceted search on the CABI Digital Library was no small feat, especially given the complexities of its hierarchical structures.
The CABI Thesaurus has been in constant use since 1983. It is updated regularly, with all database records reindexed to reflect changes to the Thesaurus on each new release. The majority of the CABI Thesaurus represents a species taxonomy, ranging from Kingdom to Species. As of early 2023, this encompassed approximately 160,000 concepts. Additionally, there are around 30,000 descriptors, with about a thousand dedicated to geographic locations for robust indexing.
